The Maritime Poland Monument at Kościuszki Square

Competition project design of the Maritime Poland Monument surrounding area

Studio 1:1 had a pleasure to co-participate with Mr. Robert Kaja in the competition for the concept of the Maritime Poland Monument at Kościuszki Square in Gdynia. We were responsible for working out the spatial design assumptions for the area surrounding the monument. While preparing the spatial design of the monument area we took into account the historical structure of the ‘white town’ and the ambition of its inhabitants to be a constantly young and modern town. Therefore the arrangement we proposed for the square was to be as consistent as possible with the proposed sculpture form. Both the area and the sculpture constitute a unity, as that is how we understand the modern thinking about city spatial design. The newly proposed spatial forms, the existing trees and building facades make up common environment where people spend time. The objective of our project was not only to organise space and commemorate but also to revitalise this part of town by encouraging the inhabitants and tourists to stop at this place.
